Occidental - Still Light Pond is approximately 1 mile from the village of historic Occidental, California. Main street is home to numerous restaurants and art galleries. There are two markets including an organic market.
Occidental History - The entire Village of Occidental is a designated Historic Landmark by the County of Sonoma. Steeped in history, the village lies tucked into a small valley surrounded by large redwood tree studded hills. This valley location gives the town an enviable mild year round climate, both escaping the famous coastal fog and also the extreme summer heat of inland cities.
The village was founded in 1876 and was the last stop on the mighty North Pacific Coast Railroad connecting Cazadero and Sausalito. The railroad brought expansion to the area and given the area’s natural beauty, central location, and favorable weather, the village not only evolved into a wonderful place to live, but also an enormously desirable place to vacation.
Since that time Occidental has retained its essential character and avoided the homogeneity of many Wine Country towns, with many of the original buildings still lining Main Street to this day. For generations Occidental’s authenticity has kept the Village a favorite destination by those looking for a unique experience seemingly far from it all but only 65 miles from San Francisco. Savvy travelers have also discovered that the journey to the Village is also part of the attraction. The ten mile long Bohemian Highway, one of the most beautiful drives in all of California, runs straight through the heart of town and is a breathtaking way to reach Still Light Pond.
In recent years, The Village has become home to artists, musicians, and urban escapees looking for more serene surroundings. It has also become known as one of the best cycling destinations in the world due to the challenging and beautiful bike routes in the surrounding area. Famous cyclist Levi Leipheimer’s enormously popular Granfondo bike event and the prestigious Amgen Tour of California professional cycling race speed right through the center of town.
